Since leaving Bank in January 2000 John Russell has worked both independently and collaboratively to produce exhibitions, publications as artworks and curational projects. Recent exhibitions include Becks futures II (2001) at ICA, London; The withdrawal from conversation/the return to the oceanic: the weight of the breast. Twenty women play the drums topless, a performance produced in collaboration with Fabienne Audéoud at the South London Gallery, London (2002) and Ikon Gallery, Birmingham (2003); and solo shows such as Geniess (2005) at the Norwich Art Gallery, The visible and the expressible (2005) at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow and Ocean Pose, Matts Gallery (2007). In addition, he has edited and designed two books Frozen Tears 1 (2003) and Frozen Tears 2 (2004), both published by ARTicle Press. The books adopt the format ofan 800-page horror/sci-fi bestseller and include texts and images by over 50 UK and international artists and writers.
