INTERZONE

A Curatorial Project by Chris Hammond for the Milano Flash Art Show 8-10 April 2005 ATA Hotel Executive via don Sturzo, 45 - 20154 Milano

Artlab (Cullinan + Richards), Fabienne Audeoud & John Russell, Shezad Dawood, International Necronautical Society, Tom McCarthy, Elizabeth Price, Matthew Thompson

MOT has been invited to curate an exhibition within a hotel room as part of the Milano Flash Art show 2005.

The International hotel room is a capsule or zone that remains unchanged from city to city, a no-mans land, both private and public. The hotel room becomes an International zone where cultures and nationalities merge into hybrid forms. MOT appropriates William Burroughs' concept of the Interzone as the context for a curatorial project set in an International Hotel, which in turn is the temporary facilitator for an International Art Fair. The artists in Interzone transport cultures borrow from other Histories and transform their national identities. In the zone artists become parodists, forming collaborative agencies and secret societies, becoming agents of undisclosed powers. The Interzone is a mirror-society created from our paranoid imagination, an in-between space, were slippage rules and concepts are cut up and allowed to drift into each other.
